Biography

Hauwa is a distinguished Chevening Alumnus, gender advocate, human rights activist and a legal practitioner with over twenty-eight years post-qualification experience in litigation, conflict resolution, social research, women and children’s rights advocacy as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights expertise. She obtained her law degree from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Nigeria and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992. She obtained a post-graduate law degree (LL.M) in Law and Development from the prestigious SOAS, University of London in 2007.

Hauwa is currently the Chair, Nigeria Bar Association Abuja branch. She has served as the National President of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Nigeria) from 2012 – 2015. She has also served in different capacities at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) at both the Branch and National level. She was the Country Director of Ipas Nigeria, an International Non-Governmental Organization that is committed to promoting women’s health as well as advancing their reproductive health and rights until November 2019. She is now back to her law firm as the Principal Partner of H.E. Shekarau & Co while also taking time to serve as the President of Women, Law and Development Initiative (WOLDI) Africa an NGO she has just initiated with a view to promoting women’s rights in Africa.

Hauwa is a regular speaker at national, regional and international conferences, a public affairs analyst on radio and television and has published a couple of articles on women’s rights issues. She is widely travelled.
